About Internship

Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, from Gauhati University, Guwahati, is accepting interns interested in the field of Physics, in the research area of Nuclear physics.

The project basically aims to design a linear neutron source that can produce neutrons by the process Inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IECF). This process of fusion is performed basically by a filamentary discharge plasma that ionises a deuterium gas. The ions produced in the discharge will be traced inertially through a negative potential (~ 100kV). At such a high potential the ions would overcome their potential barrier and fuse this DD fusion occurs. As DD fusion basically produces neutrons of 2.45 MeV and a high amount of energy, this can potentially help in various study on radiography, medical isotope productions, material studies and diagnostic developments. This principal basically is portable and can also perform studies on deuterium ions damages on different structures. The studies include: 1. Design and simulate portable geometry (spherical or cylindrical) 2. PIC simulation for ion trajectory 3. MCNP simulation for neutron and gamma productions 4. SIMION code studies for particle trajectories 5. Fabrication and diagnostic developments 6. Precursor for materials like cathode design, HV power studies, shielding structures etc. 7. Detectors and analysis.
