This research internship focuses on the critical assessment of river ecosystem health using biological indicators. The project bridges the gap between traditional field taxonomy and modern data science, utilizing specialized statistical tools to model water quality. By identifying and analyzing these organisms, the research team can detect subtle shifts in pollution levels and ecosystem stability, providing essential data for environmental conservation and policy-making. Roles and Responsibilites : 1. Execute standardized collection of diatom and macroinvertebrate samples from diverse aquatic sites. 2. Capture high-resolution micro-photographs for digital archiving and taxonomic verification. 3. Utilize dichotomous keys to identify specimens down to the Genus level. 4. Process ecological datasets in RStudio using advanced packages such as DiaThor and BioMonitor. 5. Calculate diversity indices and build water quality models to interpret the biological health of the river. Learning Outcomes : 1. Gain experience in environmental sampling and microscopic laboratory techniques. 2. Develop skill set in R-based environmental modeling, specifically for bio-assessment. 3. Learn to translate complex biological populations into actionable "River Health" indices and water quality scores.
