Affiliate Academic from King’s College London, United Kingdom , is accepting candidates interested in the field of Electrical Engineering, in the research area of Electronic and Electrical Devices.
Research Internship Description: The selected intern will carry out numerical simulations and supporting experimental comparison (optional) for thin-film photoelectronic devices, including solar cells, photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices, and related semiconductor technologies. The intern will develop, run, and analyse one-dimensional device models using SCAPS-1D, COMSOL Multiphysics, and complementary simulation tools. The role involves designing parameter sweeps, interpreting carrier dynamics and quantum-efficiency trends, and validating simulation results using experimental data to refine device models. The outcomes of this work are expected to contribute towards research publications and/or conference presentations. This role is modeled on the workflows and objectives described in "Numerical Investigation of Mirror-Configured ZnTe/CdTe Solar Cells…" (Journal of Electronic Materials). The intern will reproduce and extend similar simulation and validation studies while exploring advanced device architectures and optimization strategies. Essential Knowledge and Skills: 1. A Bachelor's degree (2:1 or above) or currently enrolled in/holding a Master's degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a closely related discipline. 2. Hands-on experience with semiconductor device modelling and simulation software, with working knowledge of both SCAPS-1D and COMSOL Multiphysics being essential. 3. Strong understanding of electronic devices and their internal physics, including semiconductor physics, carrier transport mechanisms, recombination processes, and defect physics. 4. Experience performing numerical simulations using device simulation software and interpreting simulation results for electronic or semiconductor devices. 5. Strong quantitative and analytical skills with the ability to evaluate simulation outputs and correlate them with experimental observations. 6. Experience with data analysis, visualization, and creating publication-quality figures, along with the ability to document and communicate research findings effectively. 7. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment. Desirable Skills: 1. Prior experience with SCAPS-1D, COMSOL Multiphysics, or other TCAD software such as Sentaurus or Silvaco. 2. Knowledge of thin-film photovoltaic materials (CdTe, ZnTe, perovskites, etc.), graded-bandgap architectures, or defect modelling. 3. Experience contributing to scientific publications, conference papers, or technical reports. 4. Self-motivated, curious, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently while managing research tasks effectively.
