About Internship

Course Coordinator ( Former ) from Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies (VISTAS), Chennai, is accepting interns interested in the field of Environmental Science, in the research area of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences.

This internship provides an opportunity for students to explore key areas of oceanography and coastal environmental science, focusing on how oceans, shorelines, and sea-floor systems interact with natural events such as cyclones and tsunamis. Interns will actively participate in a research project that examines coastal processes, marine dynamics, and the environmental impact of extreme weather events on coastal ecosystems. During the internship, interns will: 1. Study oceanographic features such as currents, tides, waves, and seabed characteristics. 2. Analyze shoreline changes, beach erosion, sediment transport, and coastal morphology. 3. Explore how cyclones, tsunamis, and storm surges affect coastal regions, infrastructure, and biodiversity. 4. Assist in collecting, organizing, and interpreting environmental datasets from secondary sources, satellite records, or publicly available oceanographic databases. 5. Support the preparation of research notes, literature summaries, presentations, and visual data representations. 6. Participate in weekly discussions with the research guide to review findings and refine the study. By the end of the internship, interns will develop: 1. A strong understanding of oceanography, marine environments, and coastal system dynamics. 2. Skills in environmental data analysis, scientific reading, and research documentation. 3. Awareness of climate-related coastal challenges and disaster-response perspectives. 4. Meritorious interns will also receive a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and may be invited to co-author research articles with the professor in charge. Who Can Apply: Students from Environmental Science, Marine Science, Geography, Geology, Earth Sciences, Biotechnology and Life Sciences related disciplines are eligible to apply. While the internship is ideally suited for Master’s students due to its advanced research nature, motivated Bachelor’s students with a strong interest in oceanography, coastal studies, and environmental research are also encouraged to apply.
