My Research Journey

My research journey through Konnifel began with the Child Psychology Research Internship. Coming from an academic background in History, with an MA in the discipline, I initially approached the internship with a perspective shaped by the study of societies, cultures, human experiences and the ways in which individuals and communities develop over time.

What made the experience particularly valuable was that it took me beyond the boundaries of my primary discipline and introduced me to psychological, neurological, educational and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding childhood and human development.

What Interested Me Most?

One of the most intellectually stimulating aspects of the internship for me was exploring the relationship between cognitive archaeology and child psychology.

Coming from History, I found this intersection especially fascinating because it encouraged me to think about cognition not simply as an individual psychological process, but also in relation to human development, culture and the evolution of societies.

It was an entirely different way of looking at questions that I had previously encountered through a historical lens. I was equally intrigued by the role of neuroscience in understanding child psychology, particularly the possibility of examining childhood development through the interaction of cognitive, biological and social factors.

What Research Did I Work On?

The research assignments were another important part of the experience. They required us to engage with subjects in considerable depth rather than simply producing surface-level responses.

Some of the themes I worked on involved digital and social-media-related risks, including phishing, while another area examined the educational difficulties experienced by tribal students, including issues surrounding access to schooling and participation in education.

These topics exposed me to research questions that sit at the intersection of psychology, education, society and technology. They also made me realise how complex questions concerning children and education can be: they cannot always be understood through a single disciplinary framework.

How Did the Assignments Shape My Research Skills?

The assignments were particularly enriching because they encouraged me to read extensively, identify relevant evidence, understand different perspectives and construct an argument based on research rather than assumptions.

My background in History became useful in this process because I was already accustomed to analysing sources, questioning narratives, placing issues within a larger context and looking beyond immediate explanations.

At the same time, the internship challenged me to adapt these skills to a new academic field and become comfortable with concepts and approaches that were unfamiliar to me.

What Did I Learn?

Through the internship, I developed and strengthened several important research skills.

The experience taught me that good research is not merely about collecting information; it is about asking meaningful questions, evaluating evidence carefully, understanding context and developing reasoned conclusions.

What Challenges Did I Face?

One of the key challenges of the internship was stepping into an academic field that was different from my primary discipline.

The internship challenged me to adapt my existing research skills to a new academic field and become comfortable with concepts and approaches that were unfamiliar to me.

At the same time, this experience allowed me to recognise that the research skills developed through History could be applied beyond History, while also encouraging me to learn from other disciplines.

How Did My Background in History Help Me?

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the experience was recognising how my academic background in History could contribute to research outside my primary discipline.

My experience with analysing sources, questioning narratives, placing issues within a larger context and looking beyond immediate explanations became useful when engaging with research in psychology and education.

The internship demonstrated how historical thinking can contribute to contemporary research in areas such as psychology, education and human development, while also showing me how much can be gained by stepping outside one’s primary discipline.

How Did This Experience Change Me as a Researcher?

The internship made me more comfortable with intellectual uncertainty and unfamiliar subjects.

Instead of restricting myself to questions within my primary discipline, I became more willing to explore connections between different areas of knowledge and approach research problems from multiple perspectives.

It also strengthened my confidence in conducting independent research and constructing arguments supported by evidence.

How Did Konnifel Influence My Research Aspirations?

My experience with Konnifel has therefore influenced my academic and research aspirations in a broader sense.

It strengthened my curiosity, encouraged me to explore interdisciplinary questions and gave me greater confidence in engaging with unfamiliar areas of knowledge.

More importantly, it showed me that research can become truly meaningful when different disciplines are brought into conversation with one another.

My Biggest Takeaway

The Child Psychology Research Internship was not simply an opportunity to learn about a new subject; it was an opportunity to learn how to think across disciplines, investigate questions independently and approach research with greater depth and intellectual curiosity.

That is perhaps the most valuable skill I carry forward from the experience.
